Ok so which answer and what question are you actually asking? If you are going to do it for the first time then let him do all the work because both of you will be so nervous that it will probably be more scary than pleasureable.
As for what to get him, try something more practical or personal that is either between you two or something that reminds him of a happy time in his life. If it is practical, then it has to be more expensive but if you low on cash go for the more personal touch. It takes some thinking but cheaper :)
