because thats were water runs down, rofs are usually tringular shaped, or even if there flat, water is still going to flow over the edges of them, icycles form gadually, a little teardrop sized one will start off and then it gradually gets longer as more water runs down it
it forms icicles on ur roof because when the snow mealts it drips and forms an ice cickle or when it rains if its cold it enough it freezes up and stays... or it just is realy cold and it freezes up and over night it gets bigger! O.o :D
as the water is dripping it slowly freezes and as the water continues to drip along the already frozen part it continues to freeze and get longer.
I don't have great insulation in the attic (my house is 100+ years) so that makes perfect sense. More insulation is next on my list of renos.
It forms because heat rises to the roof and melts the snow on the roof melting, it usually happens to houses that don't have good insulation
