How will my iPod touch be able to be jailbroken?

Ok so I have iPod touch 2g v3.1.2 and my mate has his iPod jailbroken (same version as me) but he used blackra1n and it is untethered Wich is strange because blackra1n is tethered. So how can I get my iPod to be jailbroken unthethered? Also is it possible to downgrade from 3.1.2 to 2.2.1? And where can I find the firmware for it? Thanks
