How to litter train a dog?

My 8 months maltipoo puppy is currently using pee-pad. He only pees on the pad, but when it comes to poo poo he make them somewhere else: like next to the pee pad or somewhere in a hidden area. I’ve got ann advice from “dog lovers/experts” saying that I should break his habbit and start litter train him. And it does sounds great, instade of using pee-pad..and place them almost every where in the house. But how can I begin this training?

Though I’ve never “litter trained” a dog, it has to be done in the same way as “house-training”, I’d think. The objective is the same…to train the dog to do his business in one place.

The number one ingredient to successful house/litter trainer is VIGILANCE…and the easiest way to do that is to keep puppy in the same room as you’re in at ALL times…put up barriers to keep him out of other rooms. (Remember the old adage…”If puppy pees, roll up newspaper, hit yourself in head, repeatedly saying “I forgot to watch the dog”…”

As stephanie said…you will need cleaning product that kill the smell of urine and feces (the smell itself will prompt the pup to use that area again, even if you can’t smell it yourself)…enzyme products are on the market for that…you can find them at Petco.

It’s all about patience not punishment…every dog varies in the amount of time it takes to train them. In the times you are not there to keep an eye on the pup, you should crate him…so he’ll learn to hold it, and so he won’t have free rein to go where he feels like it…this will save you a lot of work, and it also makes training so much faster.

PS…put him in his litter box right after he eats, as soon as he wakes up from a nap, when you get him out of his crate, and during play…do it BEFORE he starts looking for a place to go.

my puppy did the same, if you see your pup sniffing around put him/her outside in the garden an praise it if he/she does something outside as they get older they should start goingout side although I’ve never heard of litter traingin a pup x

Answer #3
  1. Get the products you will need
  2. Cleaning supplies are essential
  3. Remember that accidents can and do happen…
  4. Help the dog become accustomed to the Litter box
  5. Learn about the mistakes people make while littler training

You will find very indept information about all these things at: http://www.kturby.com/litter/litter.htm
