How much does the crochet hook size affect the finished project?

I want to crochet a shawl in half-double crochet but want it to go pretty quickly, quicker than my afghan went. I was considering using a size K-M (10.5-13 mm) hook with some medium weight yarn. I don’t have the hooks yet so I can’t make a swatch to see how it would look. Would the shawl look alright with that size needle, or do I have to use a smaller size?

the bigger da hook.. the bigger the holes are between the stiches:)
