How long does it take earthworms to propogate?

We have a baby robin who was injured in a storm. We have been feeding him worms from walmart and bait shops. He is eating well, and costing us about four dollars a day. He has an injured leg and may never be able to be released. We would like to cut our expenses by raising worm the fastest way possible.

Answer #1

You can google earthworms online and get a pound for $20, plus maybe $6-$10 shipping. That could cut costs a bit. While younger birds prefer worms, you can also mix in some bird seed as he gets older.

As for farming your own earthworms, the robin will be all grown up before you get your money back on the earthworms you buy to start.

Answer #2

If you want to grow earthworms anyway, or if you expect the robin to take longer than 90 days to grow up, just put the earthworms in a bin with shredded newspaper and any vegetable-based scraps or clippings. No orange peels, garlic or woody material though. Keep at room temperature and moist not wet, like a wrung out sponge. Use about 100 times as many earthworms as it eats per day.
