How do you check schools for an area before buying a home there?

We just moved to an area that had very top rated schools and we put our two sons into the system with confidence that they were getting the best education. Well this was not the case and the statistics that they showed us turned out to be mostly doctored as they claimed that each teacher only handled an average of 16 children. This was true for 2 hours of the day, but the other 4 hours they had over 30 students each and my oldest son is getting bored in class because the teachers focus on the children that aren’t doing so well.

We moved here based on the school system adding value to our house. Now we want to move and find a better school system as well as property that fits our budget. How should we go about finding information on the schools, infrastructure, and taxes in the town we want to move to? We know what type of place we want, we just don’t want our kids to suffer for the move.

If you’re looking around in california, there is a non profit site at greatschools.net - when we were looking up schools, that was the best resource we found. There are also some parent reviews of the schools, which are helpful. Don’t forget to actually visit the school, interview the teacher & principal as well.
