How can I tell if I have ADD?

A few years ago I realized I’ve always been hyper. But not only that… When im in class. I cant pay attention. I dont talk to other kids, I just sit there, I have to move, draw, do anything to try and pay attention. But when I get home I yell, im loud, and when im with friends im everywhere. I run, I laugh a lot and I act like im 6 years old! im about to be 18 in a month… My older brother told me how my dads side of the family has a lot of people who are ADD. I didnt know that untill a couple of months ago… I told my mom and she doesnt believe me. My friend gave me Adderoll. (how ever its spelt) and in 30 minutes I felt great, things slowed down, I payed attention in class, I did all my work, and I actually did my homework for once… I read up about the pill and now I use it illigally just so I can pass school, and its working. I never go above 30mg when taking it because thats enough for just me alone. I dont use it everyday. I only take it when I know I have a big test or exams. I love being able to do my work and be calm around my friends. how do I tell my mom I need this? or do I even need it? please help me. if anyone tells me I dont need it I wont take it. because right now… I just need to know and I havnt had the guts to tell or ask anyone.

thanks

how can you tell you have ADD

Dear noworneverdevastation, First of all taking someone else’s prescription is really dangerous. when taking these types of medications for (ADHD) you need to be monitored closely by a doctor. But knowing the Adderoll worked for you it’s time to see your doctor. Getting tested for ADHD is not a hard procedure. If your mother doesn’t believe you seek out a health care professional on your own. Ask to be tested; there is a big difference between being just hyper and having ADHD…you owe it to yourself to find out. Stop taking the pills, testing is needed; someone else’s prescriptions can kill. Sue…good luck

As my colleague says above. The only way is to get a diagnosis from a medical specialist. My partner has ADD but it wasn’t picked up as a child. The UK are only just recognising that ADD and ADHD exisits in untested adults.

Good Luck

Hi there. The only way be able to officially know that you have ADD is to go the doctor and get tested. If you have tried talking to your parents about it and they aren’t taking you seriously, then let them know you want to go to the doctor for a general check up. At the check up bring up your concerns and also mention your symptoms and the fact that ADD does run on your father’s side of the family. It might also be wise to mention that you have been taking that other medication in case they give you something that might counter-act with it.

You really shouldn’t be taken persription mediction without a script from a doctor. First you aren’t sure if you really need it. Second, if you do need the medication who’s to say you are taking the right dosage. It could be to strong or to weak. Third most ADD medications need to be taken on a day to day basis. By not doing these things and most of all not being under a health providers care, I can’t stress it enough you are seriously putting yourself at risk.

You need to deal with this as soon as possible since you are taking meds that aren’t yours. Good Luck!
