Do they really refer to Spanish people? I mean, people who came directly from Spain/ Europe?

I thought that US-Americans call everyone Hispanic who is

  • living in USA and who has
  • come there from anywhere South of the USA (Middle or South America)
  • is neither native South American nor black
  • and is thus most probably somehow related to people who came from Spain or Portugal to South America some time between Mr. Columbus days (1592) and last century.

Apparently hispanic refers to Spanish-speaking people and/or people from Latin America who are living in America. I don’t think you have to be born in America to be hispanic, it doesn’t matter where you were born as long as your family is from Latin America and you live in America. Which does include Mexicans if they’re living in the US.

Answer #5

Hispanic in its original form are the people from Hispanola, the island split by Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The term has further expanded to those who are the mix of Spanish and Native American. This includes not only Mexico, Latin America, and South America, but also includes all the islands that the spanish colonized, such as the Philippines (yes, they’re teqniqually hispanic).
