It’s not a federal offense, that’s for sure. Yes you may hack it or most notably known as “jailbreak” it. You will not go to jail, as far as I know. All I know is that if they find out, they will void your guarantee and maybe deprive you from some of their services. It all depends on the manufacturers or the provider’s terms of use. Rarely, but plausible, they can sue you, especially if you promote hacking their devices. They can even fine you for hacking it and/or make you pay for all the applications that you hacked that normally you would of had to pay for.
