guys trouble - sooo confused!

there’s this guy that I’ve been talking to on the phone every night for a couple hours, and we’ve known eachother for a couple months now. I technically have never met him in person, but I “met” him through my friends, that’s why we talk on the phone. and he flirts with me like crazy, calling me baby and stuff. my friend asked him at school if he liked me, and he said yeahh, as a friend. I’m soo confused! could he be just saying that? I mean, he barely knows my friend that asked him. help?
