This question and ichi’s response actually led me to Websters to try and nail down the terminology, specifically what exactly constitutes something as “edible.” Is it something that is able to be consumed or something that is MEANT to be consumed?

Edible means “able to be eaten.” The primary definition of “eaten” is “to have taken in through the mouth as food – ingested, chewed, and swallowed.” A gum wrapper can be ingested, chewed, and swallowed, but if it wasn’t consumed “as food,” the definition doesn’t apply.

The definition of “food” – “ material consisting essentially of protein, carbohydrate, and fat used in the body of an organism to sustain growth” – leads to a dead end. No loopholes there. And so, we must conclude that even though you can swallow a gum wrapper and have it pass through your digestive system without harm to your body, the fact that it is not food means that it is not edible.

There’s been a rumour going around that Stride gum is wrapped in an edible wrapper.

While the wrapper is safe to eat, it was never meant to actually be eaten.

technicly ALL gum wrappers are edible. you could eat them if you wanted, but I don’t believ they make any specificly to be eatten.

one time I chewed gum that shill had the papper on it nothing bad happend but it did’nt teste very good ps. never hard about the stride papper thing b 4 :/

I don’t know, but the next time you chew a cheap gum (like Big Red), take the wrapper, lick it, and stick it on your forehead. Why? you’ll see… Works with Winterfresh too. What would Juicy Fruit do?

Anything is edible that you can fit in your mouth. Paper probably isnt the best thing to eat, since there tends to be bleaches and other things added to it….
