great gatsby

does anyone know who the “middle class characters in the great gatsby were? what discussion questions can I ask that relates to the class system in the great gatsby and the 1920’s

Answer #1

Some middle class characters were: Myrtle Wilson - her husband owns a run-down garage George Wilson - Myrtle’s poor husband Klipspringer - freeloads all Gatsby’s stuff; didn’t care Gatsby died, just worried about his tennis shoes.(haha) Owl Eyes -drunk whom looks through Gatsby’s library, astonished that the books are real.

Discussion questions:

  1. How were class systems separated as shown in the book?
Having difference social classes in different sides of the city (West Egg/East Egg)
  2. How did women act in different social classes? Jordan Baker -pro tennis(or golf? I don’t remember) player Jordan represents one of the “new women” of the 1920s—cynical, boyish, and self-centered. Daisy - was married to Tom and attracted tro wealthy things, because she was upper class (hence that she wanted Gatsby “These lovely shirts!”)
Myrtle - shows women can only be rich if she is with a rich guys, shows when she is unhappy with George and wanted to be with Tom who gave her expensive things.
