What are the best German books?

It doesn’t matter what age the books are for. I’m a complete beginner at german and I’ve been reading some baby books and doing grammar exercises but I plan on working up to being able to read really complicated books, so if you have any recommendations at all, they will be very much appreciated! Also, if you know what the age group the book is meant for, then please list that too so i know.

Answer #1

mein kampf - Adolf Hiltler

Answer #2

Oh my god yes that was amazing.

Answer #3

Wow, how stereo-typical, a country’s best book is the ravings of deluded psychopath? I highly doubt it. You must be stuck in the 1940’s because Germany is not Hitler’s Germany. I bet if you read an actual German book you would decide that Mein Kampf is an excellent (though evil) piece of propaganda, not a great book. Germany is not a Nazi state and that image is harmful and hurtful to the German people.

You can get many international bestsellers translated into German on amazon.de. You can just go there and see whether they have youf favorite book in German. It is often useful to look for the name of the author, as they also translate book titles. And you don’t always recognize them.

Other that that… it really depends on what you like.

Some German authors…

On very young kids literature, I recommend the author “Janosch”. He is extremely popular with German kids. Especially the tiger-duck. http://funadvice.com/r/3muoj6vf53

For pre-teens and teens, you can read “Das fliegende Klassenzimmer”, “Das doppelte Lottchen” “Die Konferenz der Tiere” by the author “Erich Kästner”. http://funadvice.com/r/bjo4s1qbpt7 Or “Der Räuber Hotzenplotz” by “Otfried Preußler”. http://funadvice.com/r/3muoj6vfd5

If you like schmaltzy, heartsick womens novels, then read anything by “Rosamunde Pilcher”. http://funadvice.com/r/bjo4s1qbpt7#/ref=nb_sb_noss?__mk_de_DE=%C3%85M%C3%85Z%C3%95%C3%91&url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=Rosamunde+Pilcher&rh=n%3A186606%2Ck%3ARosamunde+Pilcher

If you want to laugh real hard, get any book by “Erich von Däniken”. He is a hobby-archaeologist who searches remains of ancient cultures for evidence that they had contact with aliens and writes books about it. http://funadvice.com/r/155jm05qsb9

If you like fantasy, look for “Michael Ende” and “Wolfgang Hohlbein”. http://funadvice.com/r/155jm05qtdi http://funadvice.com/r/155jm05quj1

You could of course read the classical authors, Goethe, Schiller, Lessing. But I always thought that they were boring when I had to read them at school…

Answer #5

Nope, that image is not hurtful for the German people. We resigned about that. It’s gonna stick for the next 2000 years. Like Djinghis Khan on the Mongolians…. we’d be irritated if people didn’t mention it.

Answer #6

Some of the finest novels by German authors that I found enjoyable or have yet to read was “Faust” (read) by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and works from Thomas Mann such as Joseph and his Brothers.
