University of Southern California in Los Angeles, California The Keck School of Medicine within the University of Southern California is known as an important center for medical research in a variety of fields, from opthalmology to genetics. Its Institute of Psychiatry, Law and Behavioral Sciences offers postdoctoral fellowships in forensic psychiatry and forensic psychology; both programs focus on building students’ knowledge of the law as it applies to forensic inquiry and require fellows to serve as forensic consultants in courts, jails, hospitals and related settings. Forensic psychology and psychiatry fellows also have the opportunity to continue the fellowship for a second year to develop expertise in a forensic science subdiscipline.

Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas The College of Criminal Justice at Sam Houston State University is one of the top-ranked criminal justice schools in the country, according to U.S. News and World Report, a position that has been bolstered by its relationship with the Huntsville-based Texas Department of Criminal Justice. The College offers a 2-year Master of Science degree program in forensic science that requires the completion of 44 semester hours in subjects such as crime scene investigation, forensic biology, ethics and legal issues in forensics. All students complete an internship at a forensic laboratory and an independent research project. A graduate thesis is not required.

Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan Ferris State University enrolls about 13,000 students at its main campus in Big Rapids, Michigan, a large proportion of whom pursue degrees offered by one of the six departments of the College of Arts and Sciences. The Department of Biological Sciences administers the forensic biology program, which leads to a Bachelor of Science degree and develops students’ knowledge of such subjects as forensic anthropology, biological chemistry and DNA analysis. Graduates of Ferris State’s forensic biology program might find work in forensic labs, be employed by police departments or go on to graduate school in forensic science, medicine or a related field
