The best thing to do is read the directions…ideally, you get a splitter for your phone outlet and run one line to the fax, the other to your phone, and make sure you set the fax to pick up after 5 rings, unless you have a dedicated line, in which case you won’t need the splitter, and might want to set it to pick up after only 3 rings.
