How easy of a pet to take care of are chinchillas?

I’m going back to school-commuting-and working a good amount of hours, so I don’t have tons of time for a demanding pet. I’m looking for something easy and simple to take care of, that doesn’t die as fast as a fish can, and doesn’t cost a lot to care for. Kind of interested in a chinchilla.

I had one many years ago and found them quite easy to keep. They were not overly expensive and do not entail tons of cleaning, but they are nocturnal, so sleep during the day and are awake at night. Which can be inconvenient if you are keeping a day time schedule.

Good to know. Probably wouldn’t be kept in a bedroom then. Would be nice to have a pet that’s awake when I am too so I can enjoy it, but then again, with school and work, I may be gone most of the day anyways. When you say not overly expensive, what do you mean? How expensive are they? How long do they live for?

They are easy, but give them sandbaths, not water baths.
