It’s not the wrong answer. If there are 5 apples sitting on a table and you personally pick up three of them and walk away, you then have three apples in your possession and there are 2 left on the table.
Usually the question is “If you have 5 apples and you take away 3, how many do you have?”. The answer then would be 5 apples because all 5 apples would still be in your possession.
