Good chairs are expensive, (e.g. more than, say, 89.99) and massage chairs can cost over a thousand bucks. So I think this might be cost-prohibitive for you. if you get something inexpensive it may not last and it may not do the trick.

I’m wondering if you can find a massaging pad or something that he could put in a chair.

It’s a really nice idea you have, but honestly, bad backs usually respond to heat, excercise, and anti inflammatories. Depends also whether its muscle or spinal pain.
