Co-Op Company

What is an example of a Co-Op or Cooperative company?

Answer #1

Well, Europeat least is full of them, and they are generally called Co-ops. In Norway, the cooperatives are known as ‘Samvirkelag’ (a literal translation of Cooperative association), but the shops market themselves with big signs saying Co-op, which is what everyone calls them. You don’t have to be a member to shop there, but members often get special discounts, and at the end of the year, bonuses are paid out if the company has done well.

The co-operative movement started in Rochdale, England, in the mid-1800s, initially among the weavers of the village.
