The American Kennel Club first registered the breed in 1904. They were discovered in the Chihuahua state, a region, bordering Texas and New Mexico. This is where the name of the breed came from. :)

Chihuahuas are the oldest breed of dog in North America, they came from Mexico. Their ancestors were sacrificed by the Aztecs every time someone died, as they believed the dog took all the person sins on to their soul.
