“Federal law governs truck drivers who transport goods across state lines. Drivers with a CDL may drive interstate routes if they meet the additional federal requirements. These include passing a physical exam every two years and random drug and alcohol tests. Also, drivers must have at least 20/40 vision with or without glasses and good hearing with or without a hearing aide, normal use of their arms and legs, and normal blood pressure. Persons with epilepsy or insulin-controlled diabetes may not drive heavy trucks. In addition, federal law prohibits those convicted of a vehicle-related felony, a crime involving drugs, or driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol from driving a heavy truck across state lines. In addition to earning a CDL from their own state, interstate drivers must pass a written exam covering the Motor Carrier Safety Regulations Act of the U.S. Department of Transportation.
