Can I sue my father?

My father bought me a computer some time ago, which is registered under my name. He claims there was an understanding that the computer would still be his, although I was under the impression the computer was mine. Now, he makes changes to my computer and threatens to take it away to manipulate me into doing what he wants. It is causing me mental distress. I still live at home, but I am over 18. Would I be able to take my father to Small Claims Court and sue him for ownership of this computer?

Answer #1

If he gave it to you and registered it in your name than the computer belongs to you. it would be considered a gift as such he looses all claim to it once you turned 18. all that you have to do is log on under administraters tools and remove all accses to it from him by putting it passwoard protected. than I would move it in to your bedroom and put a lock on the door

Answer #2

Well the only thing you can do is deal with it or move out. Best of luck to you.

Answer #5

Hey, douche bags. The question is whether or not Small Claims takes these kind of cases, not whether or not its ungrateful to sue.

Answer #6

Given that you’re over 18, your father can “counter claim” you owe rent…which, odds are, will be FAR more money than the value of the computer.

So if you do pursue this…you’ll probably get an eviction notice, a counter claim for past due rent (from your 18th birthday onwards) and as recompense for the lost rental money, your father would be entitled to the computer & other $$$…and, you’ll be evicted, causing potentially irreperable harm to your relationship with your parent.

Best of luck to you…however, think carefully before you proceed, eh?

I’m going to assume that you are the one who posted this question?

First of all it’s rude to call people douche bags…but I wouldn’t expect any better from someone who wants to sue their father for BUYING them something in the first place.

Why don’t you give the computer back and buy a new one with YOUR OWN MONEY. at the moment you’re a leech and the worst kind who doesn’t even seem to appreciate anything there parents do for them.

And yes you can sue your father…but do him a favour and move out of the house afterwards.
