Can I hook 2nd computer to a single DSL modem?

We now have a second tower computer. Any way that I can run a line from our old DSL box (maybe thru crawl space) to another room so that both computers could access the internet (not at the same time of course)?

Answer #1

You need to have a router in order to be able to do that. If you want wireless connections, most laptops have a wireless adapter already built in, but a desktop would need a wireless network adpter in order to connect to a wireless router. If you don’t need wireless, you can use a normal hardwire router.

Answer #2

yeah if you have several ports on the back of your box, then just get another line… you can also get an ethernet spliter..

Answer #3

There is no such thing as an ethernet splitter. You need a router.

Correction. Ethernet Spitters exist. But they will not work with a DSL router that has only out output!

Go to Circuit City, Best Buy, or other electronics store, and ask for a wireless router. Don’t just get a non-wireless one. Because then you will want to have a laptop, and other things.

Answer #4

If you have a DSL box, doesn’t it have more than one “port” on the back…like maybe four of them?? If so, you can hook up…AND both computers can be on line at the same time…That’s how I’ve got it at my house…3 computers can be on line at the same time, plus I’ve got a wireless Access Point taking up the 4th port, so I can use my laptop, too…all at the same time.
