Big dog training

How to train the dog to stop barking? because my dog is very noisy, and tends to keep barking even there is no one in his sight.

Answer #1

It might be anxiety that is causing the barking. Or boredom. Perhaps a friend would help. It did with my big dog. Now he just plays with his buddy.

Answer #2

They now have a citronella spray collar, On of my doctors used it for her dog and it worked great, very pricey. Try Ebay.

Well, first of all…what is in YOUR sight (eyes), isn’t the same as what is in your dog’s sight (nose and ears)…Different breeds have different reactivity repsonse…for instance, a Rottie has less reactivity than a German Shepherd…they both make great guard dogs, however a German Shepherd would be more likely to bark sooner and longer at distant noises than a Rot. So do take your dog’s breed into account before you decide how to go about changing the behavior. All herding dogs are reactive…Collies, Shelties, German Shepherds, Corgies…and the list goes on.

As with all training, it has to be consistant…I have a German Shep, so I know he’s going to react to things, even things I cannot see or hear…I allow a couple of “free” barks…then the command “enough” is given. In the beginning I had to physically take him into house, EVERY TIME…or away from the window…he now knows the command and takes himself away from the window or comes inside. You aren’t going to get your dog to limit his barking on his own, however, if you don’t interrupt the noise. (If he’s left to his own devices he will do as he pleases) and the collar Harley mentioned would be helpful if the dog is left on his own a lot.

A can filled with pennies or bolts tossed at the dog at the same time you say “enough” will up the ante (it really works for getting their attention) and in getting YOUR message across to your dog…
