How come the Biathlon .22 rifles make almost no sound?

My mom might enlist me in Biathlon training but I was hoping the guns would sound cool. But they make no noise at all.

Answer #1

A .22 LR is not a very loud or powerful round to start with. The subsonic .22 LR ammo used in biathlons is quieter than higher velocity rounds.

Answer #2

but why?? :D

Answer #3

The same reason a small fire cracker isn’t as loud as a large one. A .22 LR shell is a small shell that doesn’t hold much powder. When a bullet goes through the sound barrier its ballistics change so when short range accuracy is more important than stopping power an even lighter load is used so the bullet will not go supersonic.
