Is Apache OpenOffice a good program?

I’m seriously thinking about downloading either Apache OpenOffice or LibreOffice due to the amount of writing I do. My computer didn’t come with a good program, and I’m really sick of having to find a spell checker and word count (I’m very picky about how many words are on my project). I have a Windows 7 computer that came with something like Office Word but I had to buy it. We got rid of it and I have Wordpad and Notepad and neither have spell check. I’m concerned about downloading either program because I don’t want to get a virus. So are these alright to download? Or should I save money up to get a good program at Wal*Mart?

Both are pretty much the same thing. They are an open source version of M$ Office and will open most M$ Office files too (Exception being M$ Access Databases - you have to do some trickery with those). Actually had better luck printing things from OpenOffice’s Calc and Impress as opposed to Excell and Powerpoint. Another option for a nice lightweight word processor is AbiWord. Coworker who does a lot of writing uses that.

We keep a copy of OpenOffice on all the computers at work, even if they have M$ Office on them.

i would not go with AbiWord the file conversion is terrible it will mess up the spacing when saved as a .doc or .docx document (words will fuse together, sentences will be misaligned) has some horrible header/footer spacing also the .abi format is unreadable with other programs. open office is good though
