Am I Goth?

I’m in uni and pretty much a geek, and I’d never checked out the subculture before but am fascinated with it. I’ve read that goths embrace both the positive and negative aspects of the world and find beauty in the darkness that the average person would rather pretend doesn’t exist - if so, that’s me for sure. I’d like to dress the same way too, but I’ve always been too shy to. If I knew that my mindset was goth, though, I’d be more likely to embrace that side of myself. ^_^

I hear you’re supposed to have a “goth lifestyle”, too, but I don’t get what that is - why should all goths do the same things anyway?

“worshiping the devil and sacrificing sheep” !!! pffttt! hahahahaha. say, what horror movies have you been watching? since when does goth mean satan worshiper? they are two diferent things! trust me, I know. im a bit goth myself, although you wouldnt know that by looking at me. I am: bohemian, free spirited, goth, preppy, anything else you can think of. just not satanic worship or any crap like that. I am a christian who firmly believes in God. to be goth is to be more into things other people dont really care for. like gothic times/ I dont really want to say culture though. but its not like being a punk rocker, you dont have to wear black and a whole bunch of eyeliner. its more of victorian/ romantic/ rennascance. if your interested in that stuff does not mean your evil. so just do what you want. wear what you want. serious, dont be a sterotype. I am everything and nothing. somedays I will dress like a prep others bohemian, and others goth and such. its just who your are. it means your free spirited and more connected with things than others. and like the person above me say “if you really want to make it in life and fit in, find some cool friends thaat arent cool by style or popularity” just find some friends that are cool by YOUR standards. good luck finding yourself. peace and love!! <3

people that worship satan and sacrifice sheep aren’t goth, anyone can do that. and for labeling someone that does that a goth, that’s just stupid. goth doesn’t really exist to me, no matter what anyone says. labels are stupid, and people should be themselves. it’s not the clothes,make-up, music, or anything, it’s just you, so dress in anything you want to, but don’t try to be anything but yourself. people don’t like people that try so hard to be something. I doubt people even know what real goth rock is, and a lot of people in the town I live in that say they’re goth listen to icp and slipknot and wear those tacky tripps with chains and dress in black. so it just makes them look pathetic by calling themselves something. they complain about the “preps”, but they look the same too, so it’s really no difference.

if you really want to make it in life and fit in, just be yourself, find some cool friends that aren’t cool by style or popularity, etc.

Answer #3

Just start worshipping satan and sacrificing sheep.

I agree, I never had any intention to change my lifestyle to be more goth. It’s more like…I want to know if I have a lot in common with people of that subculture. And that I’m not misunderstanding them.

It doesn’t matter if they think I’m a poser, but if I am, I’d like to be aware of it. :)

Answer #5

Your only a goth if you think you are. But If I where you I wouldn’t get caught up with all those stupid lables.

Answer #6

I’ve always thought the term “goth” aka “gothic” seemed so stereotypical… Just as a “prep” would be. What makes the exact definition of “goth”?

Why should all “goths” have the same lifestyle.. ? Why should you be categorized with the “goths”?

Just be and believe what you want. Live how you want. Just because you have the same mindset as that stereotype… It doesnt mean you have to live that way.

I hope that wasnt too confusing…

Answer #7

probably, and you dont have to dress like a goth or live like a goth, because being goth is all about being different…

Answer #8

sounds like it… bt you dont have to dress like a goth if you don’t want to

Answer #9

A goth is simply someone who likes gothic rock. It isn’t really a fashion, it’s not a lifestyle, it’s certainly not a religion.
