Shih Tzu is dry around eye

Around my dog’s right eye, well its getting dry. And I assume it itches because my dog will rub against the floor and/or everything from time to time. I thought if I left it alone it would disappear but its actually spreading. Is there some kind of lotion I can get at a store?? I know I should probably go to the vet but the last time I saw them they wanted to charge me a huge amount $$ for something I saw and could have gotten from a pet store. Or is there a home remedy for dry skin for animals!?…(sigh) please let me know anything. THX!

I’d go to another Vet, and have them check for Mange (Demodectic type)…it manifests itself on the face around eyes, under the chin, on the cheeks, and is very itchy. You have to get a prescription “dip” or shampoo from the vet. The spots appear to be scaley or crusty, with hair loss. It is not catchy to humans, but it is sure miserable for a dog.

I would try a different vet.

You can also try giving him/her a SMALL dose of Benedryl in children’s liquid form, like 1/4 tsp if it’s adult, 1/8 tsp if a puppy. It very well could be allergies causing this.

If that doesn’t help you really should take him/her to a vet.
