The average place for a young reasonable well off person to stay in South Africa is like 500 square feet.

Me and my mother live in a small house and the whole place is about 3500 square feet and that is including the garden which is half and the place has three bedrooms.

My house is just slightly over 1200 sq ft, so I think an apartment that size would be a good size. Just make sure, that at least your main living areas (living room, kitchen, master bedroom) will be big enough to accommodate your requirements.
