Nuneaton was heavily bombed during the Second World War, due to being the location of several munitions factories. Therefore most of the town centre was rebuilt in the latter half of the 20th century. The 19th century author George Eliot was born just outside Nuneaton, and many locations in her novels are based on the area. Nuneaton itself appears as "Milby" in her works.
