Why won't my dog eat after surgery?

It has been 2 days now, and she still won’t eat. All she does is turn her head when we try to give her something. She will drink water, occasionally, but not nearly enough. The vet gave her a fluid shot and a anti nausea shot yesterday so I was wondering if maybe that was the issue? Does anyone have any suggestions on how we could get her to eat something? Thanks for any help.

My dog didn’t eat after a month the doctor said try soft foods and that helped a little. Ask your vet sometimes they will give you nutrient drops that go into their water to make sure they get the nutrients they need. Its not something to worry majorly about unless you can start counting ribs. Make sure to always have food available and if she isn’t sick from post surgery she will eat on her own volition.

Thank you for your response. After some more web searching, I did find that it is normal for a dog not to want to eat sometimes for a few days. The other thing that is concerning me now is that she hasn’t had anything to drink since yesterday. She hasn’t even tried to drink any water at all today. I put some water in a syringe and tried to squirt it into her mouth, but she won’t even swallow it. She will just hold it in her mouth until it runs out. I don’t know why she’s doing this.

If my dog wouln’t eat a MONTH after surgery, I’d be looking for a second opinion. That is NOT normal…a few days to a week, maybe….depending on the type of surgery….but a month is way too long.
