How to convince my Mom for another dog?

Back in September of `07 we had to put down our 14 year old lab. We had her my whole life and we all really miss her. My other dog is 5 now and is doing great but only because we live near one of her best dog friends. I know she would be more lonley if she didnt have a friend. I volunteer at an animal shelter and really really really want to take home one of the older dogs or a puppy that is the last of its litter to get adopted but my mom says no. She isnt ready for 2 dogs again. Thats all she says to. And every time I ask her, she gets really angry. I am responsible and always take care of my one dog all she does is take her for a run every morning while I am at school. How can I convince her to let me get a dog. I know all the dogs in the shelter and they know me so I would actually know the dog before it comes home. My dad is reluctant too but he will be easier to deal with when my mom finally caves. Please help!

I think your mom is at a place for now, where caring for the one dog just feels easier than two…she may still be grieving over your old dog, also (14 years is a LONG time)…and getting a pup…well, puppies are VERY time intensive, as you know. You’re in school, and she’s home taking care of it.

School will soon be out, so maybe approach her with the idea of getting a pup when school ends, and you’ll be there to do a lot of the intensive stuff…housetraining, obedience, etc…that will take her off the hook for that. You might not be able to get THIS pup you’re talking about, but working at the shelter, you know new ones come in everyday.
