Why is Having Guns Such A Bad Thing?

So there are so many people who think there should be stronger gun control or even outlaw guns whatsoever. Well my question is simple whats wrong with having them?

Many people hunt, take away their guns and you do what? Take away their hunting? This in turn would cause problems with wildlife becoming more abundant, leading to them causing problems in populated areas along with disease spreading. In Virginia, white-tailed deer are becoming too abundant and many diseases are spreading.

Parent’s should have the right to teach their kids to shoot. Be the responsible parent and teach them to hunt and shoot but keep the guns locked away in a locked gun cabinet along with trigger locks on the guns.

if we take away law abiding citizens do we not give criminals and gangs the upper hand by letting them have guns, with us having none to protect ourselves when put in that situation? Gang members and such will still have guns even if they’re outlawed.

The reason I favor strict gun control has nothing to do with preventing crime. The availability of guns is only one contributing factor in violent crime rates, and it’s up for debate what kind of impact gun control legislation would have on crime.

My reasons are based on safety. There should be a set of rules in place governing the purchase and ownership of firearms for the simple reason that not just anybody should be allowed to have a gun. It’s accidental deaths from shootings and the general mishandling of weapons that concerns me. We regulate every other product that can kill people. Why not do the same with guns? Gun ownership and use for self-defense should require proper training and safety education, and if you are a hunter, attending a separate safety course is usually, and should be, mandatory. In addition, some types of weapons should never, ever be available for sale to the general public.

I get tired of the straw man arguments that involve Nazi-esque government agents going from door to door, taking everybody’s beloved guns and throwing them into a big bag, thus depriving the people of the means to rise up and overthrow the government. First of all, I can count on one hand the number of Americans I know who would seriously consider taking up arms against the government, regardless of its policies. Second, unless you live in a dangerous urban area or you are a hunter who uses his weapon to obtain food, you do NOT need a weapon. Shooting for sport is fine as a hobby, but you will have to accept that to engage in this hobby, you need to follow the rules.

Gun control is not banning guns…

When the government first started to require vehicle registrations and drivers license, did people protest saying they want to ban cars?

The bottom line is, that countries with strict gun control laws have a tiny fraction of the gun deaths (accidental or otherwise) than the US.

We need strict gun laws to protect society as a whole. Those who want to own guns should need to be licensed and proven qualified. And they must be legally responsible for the security of that gun. If it gets into the hands of someone else, and used in a crime, or even an accidental shooting, they should be charged with a felony and mandatory jail time.

Owning a gun must come with heavy responsibility. If you might lose your home, or go to jail for not securing weapons, it will most likely make you extra careful. I personally know of 2 horrific family accidents that occurred because of a lack of firearm security. You read about them in the paper all the time. Yet the powerful NRA continues to claim that any regulation is wrong and unconstitutional. They are a disgusting organization, and are responsible for hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of innocent lives.

Nothing, I own a bunch.

Answer #5

Well, the number of people dying from an accidental gunshots, is less any in these catagories…Motor Vehicle wrecks, falling, poisoning, fire, drowning, ingestion of objects, and medical complications…as with everything else in the world…nothing is 100% safe.

There’s nothing wrong with owning guns…it’s a personal freedom that comes with personal responsibility…just like a car.

Answer #6

rickd, please show me where in my post I said anything about trying to “take them”. What I said was they must be heavily regulated, and that owning a gun should come with legal responsibility to ensure it is secured properly.

Answer #7

Second, unless you live in a dangerous urban area or you are a hunter who uses his weapon to obtain food, you do NOT need a weapon.

Have you ever heard of skeet shooting?? It’s consisdered a sport…tho, you do not eat them, and they are not dangerous.

Continue reading, phrannie. I made mention of shooting for sport. But it’s not a necessity, it’s a hobby. And people who do it will still be able to even if there is stricter gun control.

Turn on the news. Did you see that eight year old who was given a gun, by his parents. And he shot his father and his fathers friend?

Now the eight year old is charged with murder.

Answer #10

There are places in this world where guns are completely criminal in the hands of private citizens, sich as the UK. Guess what happened right after guns were banned in the UK?

Gun crime immediately went UP 40% just as the advocates of right to self defense said it would. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/1440764.stm

When will the anti-gun folks finally understand why criminals love gun control laws?

Answer #11

Yeah, every day I pack a 9mm next to my sons juice box and say have a good day at school.
Seriously, I am sure if you made owning hand guns illegal then all the killers and gangsters will say well I guess I cant kill anymore because owning hand guns are illegal. And if we happen to catch the people owning guns I am sure they would be tottally incapable of killing another human being without guns.

Answer #12

Souternsixx, I’m Northerner with leanings to the liberal side, BUT mostly I agree with you. I think hunting guns, and hand guns for protection (after licensing and formal classes) should be allowed. The problems, as I see it are two fold. 1.) A big source for illegally used guns, is theft of improperly stored legal guns, and 2.) A major cause of gun shot wounds and deaths for the average American is their own or a neighbor’s gun. Again improper storage or untrained users. I think if a person is trained properly, and stores all weapons and ammo securely gun ownership should absolutely be allowed.

(However, IMHO auto weapons and special penetrating ammo should not be.) Take care and Good Luck!!

Answer #13

b/c there are careless parents out there that will give their kid a gun and that kid will go kill people. the gun itself bad?? no, its just that they fall into the wrong hands. not all parents are responsible, and not all are going to teach their kids. I dont have a problem with hunting, I dont care one thing bout it, but im not going to start whinning bout it either. I see your point but reality is, the wrong people gets a hold of them and it turns out someone gets killed, or seriously injured. drunks get them and think they can shoot something and it be ok or something and a tragedy happens. its reality, its bad, but its reality
