Union.
Loyal to the federal government and opposing the Confederates, who wanted to secede from the Union mainly to institutionalize a protection of slavery.
No thanks, I'd rather not have slaves.
They didnt want to institutionalize Slavery. The union wanted to change the way of life in the south. And the union commited 100s of war crimes. And abraham lincoln was even saying for a while that there was no war between the states what type of president is that. And the only reason why the war blewup the way it did was cause abraham lincoln was trying to control the south even after they seceded even when he had no control over it.
Before the war each state controlled it's own military ( Large national guard small federal military.) for the most part after the war we developed a large federal military and a small national guard. It also removed a lot so statehood independance and replace it with dependance of federal government. . . . Plus now no state ( Except Texas) can remove itself from the Union. . . . I am so glad I live in TEXAS. . . .
'They didnt want to institutionalize Slavery. The union wanted to change the way of life in the south. '
Ok, here are some resources for you.
http://www.mce.k12tn... (a school's site):
These seven states formed a new union called the Confederate States of America. The South gave three reasons for leaving the Union:
1. The Confederate States felt the United States thought they had broken the Constitution.
2. The Confederacy argued that the United States had failed to enforce the Fugitive Slave Laws.
3. The government would not allow slavery in the new territories.
Or, Yahoo! Education (http://education.yah...)
On the Confederacy's 'new' Constitution after seceding from the Union:
'Slavery was 'recognized and protected,' but the importation of slaves 'from any foreign country other than the slave-holding States or Territories of the United States of America' was prohibited. The general welfare clause of the old Constitution was omitted, protective tariffs were forbidden, and for most appropriations a two-thirds vote of congress was required'
Or, Columbia Encyclopedia, on the Confederates' Constitution:
'The constitution closely resembled the Constitution of the United States, even repeating much of its language, but naturally had states’ rights provisions. '

Should I continue?
I wouldn't side with either one.
The Confederacy's reasoning for war was that they had a good thing going and they didn't want to lose it. They were the Persian Gulf of cotton and tobacco back then, and much of their profit was derived from free, or relatively cheap, labor. They feared economic dependence on the North, if slavery was abolished or contained. They were fighting for a way of life that had become antiquated when everybody moved away from feudalism.
The Union's intentions were less than noble too. Keep in mind the draft riots in New York, Boston and other Northern cities. People didn't want to fight for the abolition of slavery, many saw no reason to die for the blacks to have freedom. And until Grant, most Northern generals were incompetent or too political. The South had all the best trained generals. So I wouldn't want to fight under a Union banner either.
The Civil War is fascinating to study, and very important. But actually living through it would have been horrible, and I can't see a good reason to join either side.

Who do you go for, confederates or union?
