Keep in mind that the Gospels are not historical records, they're narratives (what we would call 'fiction'). If there is a historical root to Jesus, no one knows anything about it. So, attempts to say anything at all about Jesus amount to nothing but speculation.
So yes, it's possible, but there isn't anything substantial to base it on.
I believe that there COULD have been a guy named Jesus who was with Mary and had a daughter named Sarah. BUT what I do not believe is that Jesus had any supernatural powers of any sort.
No, agreeing with toadaly that this is a narrative, I don't think any of the Gospel authors really hint at Jesus and Mary Magdalene being married. Most of the Biblical narrative points toward a celibate Jesus, especially passages like Matthew 19:10-12. The DaVinci Code is based mostly on fabricated history, much like the Gospel narratives themselves.
I believe the closeness that Mary and Jesus had is because she had a mental illness issue that was healed by Him. She seems to be the only disciple that really got what Jesus was saying.
Elone,
Are you basing your last statement on the standard New Testaments books or on the gnostic gospels that mention Mary Magdalene? Just curious. I read those and found them fascinating.
The laws in Jesus' time mandated a preacher must be married so yes I think Jesus was Married as to who I'm not sure? Could have been Mary Magdalene, Martha or her sister Mary. Did he have any Children? no one knows.
The Da Vinci Code stuff is nonsense to historians, English teachers and theologians alike (but it's a good read, I'll grant you that). Jesus and Mary do seem to have been close (she 'sat at his feet' just as apprentice teachers sat at the feet of the teachers who were training them) but, as elone says, the Gospels imply this was a platonic teacher/pupil relationship, as with Jesus and John. And, if you look at it logically, even without the theological reasons, it made sense for Jesus to be celibate - the Son of God having a child? Bad move. I'm personally not a gnostic fan, eleni. A lot of 'stuff hidden from the ignorant masses but revealed to the wise' - very elitist. I don't really believe that's how God works - I truly believe that any of us can know Him.
This is completely silly. As toadaly said, there is zero proof that a man named jesus, as described in the gospels, ever actually lived. The only proof are books written by men long after his supposed execution, and that have been edited time and time again. It is pure speculation at best. But as paulcic stated, t that time it was almost unheard of for a jewish man, particularly a rabbi, to be unmarried and childless.
But really, does it matter, it is all fiction anyway.
jesus was married to mary magdalene, and they did have a child called sarah.
Hi, Flossheal. Great to hear from you again. I totally agree with your comments about The Da Vinci Code. I was reading the gnostic gospels way before that ever came out though. I do agree that gnosticism sounds elitist on the face of it but I think it's no less elitist than the idea that "I'm going to heaven and the rest of you are going to hell." I consider gnosticism to rather be a great equalizer. It was one of the first religious systems to promote equality between the races and sexes. It wasn't that the hidden wisdom wasn't available to everyone but rather that only a few would be devoted enough to ever find it. Did Jesus himself not say that there would be only a few who would find the way?
I have heard the argument that all rabbis must be married and that makes sense. But I also know that early Christianity heavily promoted celibacy so that makes sense too. I'm comfortable saying that I simply don't know.
No he did not are you serious?Never! Also along wiht toadaly, you dont have any proof that he did!Ridiculous.
yeah then why aint that recorded in the bible.

What do you believe?
Do you think jesus couldve been with mary magdelene and had a daughter named sarah?
