Saving Gas

Does it take more gas to drive faster on the highway to get to places or drive on the side streets and get to places?

Answer #1

They tested for gas mileage behind an 18 wheeler on the TV show ‘Myth Busters’ and found it is true - you definately save gas - reduced drag on your vehicle - closer they got the better up to 40% savings but PLEASE do not drive too close behind.

Answer #2

It’s like drafting for cyclist, but using your car instead.

Draft: To follow another vehicle so closely that the leading vehicle takes the brunt of the wind resistance, and acts as a wind-break for the drafting vehicle.

Answer #3

I believe you use more gas on side streets cause there is more stop and go then on a highways

Answer #4

Slower you’re able to drive, keep your tires inflated, on the open road, drive behind an 18 wheeler (not too close), keep the car tuned, all are gas-saving - side routes may be worse due to the frequent stop-and-go driving - much higher and I’m getting a Scooter…Hope this helps !!

Answer #5

Well, I think its the act of accelerating that uses a lot of gas, which is why city driving tends to use more than highway. But driving continuously at 80 mph might use a lot more than driving continuously at 60 mph, at least that’s what they told us in the oil crunch in the 70’s. Maybe it was false and it was really to do with horrific hi-speed accidents… Someone else may know…

Answer #6

amblessed, whats that about driving behind an 18 wheeler? aerodynamics? Caught in the tailwind? How neglible do you think that would be, in the whole picture? I had a friend who insisted on idling in neutral at stop lights because he was convinced he was saving more than a drop of gas. I suppose everything adds up.

Answer #7

Thats what I thought until like the news told if you slow your driving you could save gas but I dont know
