New Chihuahua Puppy Advice

I’m preparing to pick up my new chihuahua. She is 15 oz. at 3mths old. I’ve never owned a chihuahua before, and have no other pets. Does anyone have any advice on training a chihuahua or chihuahua behaviors? Im planning on puppy pad training…

I picked out Princess as her name. She has been to the vet and, happily, is very healthy. Shes tiny but not under-weight. Thank you for everyones input. Very helpful

Sorry, but there is a lot of info. Also you vet may tell you your puppy has Luxcating Patelia’s. ( bad spelling) this is slipping of the knees, and Open Fontail. this is where the skull is not completly shut, almost like a soft spot on a baby, if the opening is too big it may cause water on the brain, a lot about these dog and more if they are tiny, if it is a female and she stay’s tiny, I do not recommend breeding her unless you have the money to do x-rays or a c-section. just did a c-section on mine and it ran about 1000.00. so just be carful. It does sound like you are getting a very tiny dog. My pup is almost 4 wks old and is 1.12 lbs. Just be very careful with a pupy that size

It can be done though, we have 2 chihuahua’s in our household. I actually have 4 dogs total, and they all use the puppy pee pads. It takes a little time, but you have to be consistent on spanking them (not hard), when they pee on the floor, and then showing them where they are supposed to pee after. Also, if you rub one of the pee pads in the dogs pee, it will get the scent and they will recognize what to do faster.

I have two chihuahuas and they are very loving dogs that love attention. I know max is always the center of attention at my house after a long day. Chihuahuas have different personalitys but are know for observing you. Max knows when I put my coat on or get the keys, or even grabbing his leash, that its time to go. They also know what time it is for bed, and if im late for bed he walks right in my room, jumps on my bedand starts sleeping.good for you, and puppy pad training might be a bit hard because chihuahuas are very independent.

I am a proud owner of a chihuahua (in pic) and right now at the young age I would suggest that you feed him/her reguarly and make sure you give him/her a reasonable amount of naps in a day so they have enough energy to go through the rest of the day. when they get older (maybe around 2 years old) take him/her on walks twice a day to get her active also get him/her a toy. try to pet him/her a lot and give him/her a reward (maybe if him/her peed on her doggy mat, didnt beg when you all were eating, etc.). also find him/her a playmate, you know one that will come along with him/her whenever you leave and they could spend the afternoon together. last, chihuahuas LOVE wind! take him/her to the park where there is a lot of grass. and run your dog and watch once the wind comes in the chihuahuas ears will flap like crazy!!!

hi, my answer to part of your question is to start traing early. if you wait too long your bound to have a tiny night mare on your hands. I am getting a chihuahua also and I think litter box training is much better than paper training, becasue the paper might leak through and soil your floor. if you litter train then make sure you watch the chihuahua for some time so it doesn’t eat anything nasty..

Everything said is correct, well almost, but anyway, That is a very tiny chi baby for that age, I would take it to the vet as soon as you can. Ones that size can have many problems. My first one died of Liver Shunt, read about that. It will more then likely not be indepent being that size, I have a male who is about 6 lbs and he can jump up and down on things and hold his own, My female is 4 lbs and I have to pick her up to get on and off bed, couch… and other things. Feed them two to three little meals a day and make sure always have water. It is very hard training them, I like pee pads but I choose to make mine got outside, you have to keep in mind they are dogs. Once you train them on pee pads they can sometimes have a hard time understanding why they can’t go on clothes left on the floor or carpet, I don’t recommend hitting them to train them, there is a spray that you can put on a piddle pad to make them more interested in going there and it does work. My main concern is that you socialize these little guys, they need interaction with other people and dogs so they do not become nippy. I do with you lots of luck and please if you have any questions you can fun mail me, Also see if you can find snuggle safe. they are disk you can heat up in the microwave and these little dogs love them very much and winter is coming. I have a hard time getting my babies to go out when there is snow, rain or even when it is cold. so if you use a piddle pad don’t keep moving it around, pick a spot and keep it there.
