Did you hear about this? That's not right lol. What are your opinions?

True, but it is not up to a judge to decide if parents need to change their childs name. I agree that some kids names these days are silly but it is up to their parents what they want to name their child.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand -' A family court judge in New Zealand has had enough with parents giving their children bizarre names here, and did something about it.

Just ask Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii. He had her renamed.

Judge Rob Murfitt made the 9-year-old girl a ward of the court so that her name could be changed, he said in a ruling made public Thursday. The girl was involved in a custody battle, he said.

The new name was not made public to protect the girl's privacy.

'The court is profoundly concerned about the very poor judgment which this child's parents have shown in choosing this name,' he wrote. 'It makes a fool of the child and sets her up with a social disability and handicap, unnecessarily.'

The girl had been so embarrassed at the name that she had never told her closest friends what it was. She told people to call her 'K' instead, the girl's lawyer, Colleen MacLeod, told the court.

In his ruling, Murfitt cited a list of the unfortunate names.

Registration officials blocked some names, including Fish and Chips, Yeah Detroit, Keenan Got Lucy and Sex Fruit, he said. But others were allowed, including Number 16 Bus Shelter 'and tragically, Violence,' he said.

New Zealand law does not allow names that would cause offense to a reasonable person, among other conditions, said Brian Clarke, the registrar general of Births, Deaths and Marriages.

Clarke said officials usually talked to parents who proposed unusual names to convince them about the potential for embarrassment.'

That's weird huh?

I think maybe it's for the best. That poor kid has to grow up with people calling them that just imagine all the abuse you'd get at school for it.

I dunno... I think they should just make a law saying that at any given age or time, a child can legally change their name and that their parents MUST allow the child to change the name. I dont know if its right to make them change their name unless it actually violates one of their laws.

Having never been named 'Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii' it is pretty easy for us to say that parents should be able to name their children what they want. I agree with a parent's rights but I ALSO agree with a child's rights. How sad that the child was so embarrassed by this AND that the parents were so insensitive to her feelings...that a judge had to step in...

I have worked in medicine for years and we kept a book where we recorded the funny names we would see in the hospital..

Triplets born to parents with the last name Duck...huey, dewey and louie...yep, they named their triplets after donald duck's nephews...

Also, a lady was named - Jump Up and Shout For Joy Jesus - last name, Jones.

Truly embarassing names are a real handicap, but lots of people hate their names for a while, so perhaps you can get used to anything in the end.

In the American Puritan days there were some weird names, including my least favourite: Flee Fornication.

I think that the child should have been given another name...but who are we to have a say in what people name their kids...most names have a meaning to them...and to the parents. what is the point of birthing a child that you cannot name...?

my mom named me after an indian bear that means most beautiful. as a kid I hated it because no one could say it and people still screw it up, but I like now and I see why and understand why she named me what she did.
