Can I become emancipated in Ohio at 16?

I will be 16 years old in September and I am graduating in May of 2008, which would make me still only 16. I intend to go straight to college but Im scared that my mother is going to try and stop me. Once I graduate am I tecnically a legal adult in Ohio? Can I be emancipated? I don’t want her to be able to stop me from going to college. My mom and I don’t really get along so this is something Impretty worried about. Any information you can provide me with would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks, Joey

id hope so my boyfriend is 16 and lives in a horrible home his parents are always at the bar or getting high. he has a 1 year old sister that he has to watch all the time because they are at the bar. they are abusive physically and mentally. its a dirty home as well I cant stand going over there its so dirty! I want to help him as much as possible and emancipation came to mind! Now if the judge saw what a horrible home it was couldnt he get emancipated and live with me and my family? he would have a job. im scared of what might happen if he stays in this house! HELP! Although you are graduating (which is GREAT by the way high five), no, you are legally not an adult. Until you are 18, you are legally a juvenile. Now, first thing to do would be to talk to your counselor, because she/he can provide all the information concerning the Court Office for getting Emancipated, but only if you REALLY want this. Emancipation does not mean, “Oh now I can move out”…no…It means that your parent/guardian is “unfit” to raise you, and that they are dropped as your legal guardian. Basically, you are on your own. I think that it is so awesome that you want to go to college, but the world we live in is in not this friendly place all the time. Sometimes we need ol’ mom’s help sometimes, but if she is stopping you from doing your dream, I can understand how you feel, However, the Courts will have their own opinion about whether they want to emancipate you or not. So, you need to go down there and explain your case to them, and pray that they grant your request. So, a counselor, a teacher, and friends mom, any grown up that you can trust is good to talk to about getting this done. But just know that anybody has a different opinion, and don’t run away, because even if you are graduated, until the day you turn 18, you are a juvenile, and you can get put in Juvenile Hall. Good Luck and I Hope I Helped! <3

Rebecca, I explained the case to my dad who is a lawyer. If he can prove that his parents are unfit then he might have a chance of emancipation. The only thing is sometimes it can come around and bite you in the butt. He could also get put into foster home as well as his sister. They could even possibly get split up into two different homes. Im not saying he cant get emancipated im just telling you that there are also other things the judge can say instead of “yes, I grant you emancipation rights” Good Luck! Hope I helped!
