After publication of this story, the APS responded with a statement that its Physics and Society Forum is merely one unit within the APS, and its views do not reflect those of the Society at large.
Rickd, please give the ENTIRE story...There has been NO CHANGE OF HEART that represents the entire body of APS physicists...
hmmm...it makes me wonder why they are now changing their opinion. what could have possibly changed some of their minds???
The leadership of the society had previously called the evidence for global warming "incontrovertible." Of the 186 billion tons of CO2 that enter earth's atmosphere each year from all sources, only 6 billion tons are from human activity. Approximately 90 billion tons come from biologic activity in earth's oceans and another 90 billion tons from such sources as volcanoes and decaying land plants. good reasons to be skeptical: They detest Al Gore; they're not too fond of us bothersome environmentalists whom they label as alarmists and tricksters; we itty-bitty humans couldn't possibly make an impact on this big old planet and its limitless sky; the Sun's getting hotter (or colder), not sure which; Milankovitch cycles (the Earth's eccentricity, axial tilt and precession); volcanic eruptions; climatologists are getting rich on all those grants and are America-hating liberals; a distrust of science and an abiding faith in their own intuition; it snowed in May.
I agree mostly with you, melissain...but I'm a bit of a tree hugger...so...I guess I am majorly biased. plus I'm from washington...land of nature and trees.
amoebas right...
something seems a bit fishy about all this...
maybe this all has something to do with the kyoto treaty and the fact that americans need to step up to it. I don't know...

The aps (american physical society) an organization representing over 50,000 scientists has reversed its stance on climate change, and is now proclaiming some of its members do not believe in human-induced global warming.
Can we begin to have non-global alarmist discussions about the environment with out precluding the end of civilization in ten fricken years.
